The UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) has issued advice for businesses and individuals to remove certain non-sterile cleansing wipes from first aid kits due to a public health risk.
There have been 59 confirmed cases of Burkholderia stabilis infection in the UK between 2018 and 3 February 2026. The outbreak has been linked to several non-sterile, alcohol-free wipe products. Some cases have resulted in serious infections, and there has been one associated death.
The following products were found to be contaminated with the strain responsible for the outbreak:
• ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
• Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free
• Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
Testing also identified contamination in:
• Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
(This product contained a different strain not linked to the outbreak cases.)
These wipes, commonly used for skin cleansing and cleaning in or around wounds, have now been withdrawn from sale. However, they may still be present in workplace and home first aid kits.
What you should do:
• Check your first aid kits at work and at home.
• If you have any of the affected products, stop using them immediately.
• Dispose of them in your normal household waste.
The overall risk to the general public is considered low. However, individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems may be at greater risk. Please ensure you follow UKHSA guidance and take appropriate action.
Please share this information and carry out a first aid kit check today.
